Flooring under Travertine tiles

Hi,

I have some large format (50cm x 50cm) travertine tiles being laid next week and I've just laid the floor in preparation (Bathroom). I've removed all the old floorboards as they appear to have been badly damaged during previous installs and replaced with new 22mm chipboard and then added 6mm marine ply over the top.

I've done the same previously in a different house but with smaller tiles so just wondered if this is sufficient for the larger travertine tiles?

That 6mm ply will be just fine.
....If you like ruined stone floors that is!

It should be 15mm minimum overlay (so 18mm as nobody makes 15mm)
or a 12mm tile specific board such as Hardibacker.

Take up the 6mm ply and replace with marmox boards. It wont cost that much but will give you peace of mind.

Thanks, both of you. I've just drylined the walls with marmox so could do the same with the floor. Is marmox/concrete board better than an 18mm WPB ply?

It's better as it doesn't move with moisture but your substrate has to be deflection free.
