I recently became reacquainted with this article about the amazing tool chest built over 100 years ago by a carpenter named HO Studley. I used to subscribe to this magazine way back when during the time I dreamed of becoming a professional woodworker. I've lost track of my copy of this issue, but here is a sample of what was written in Fine Woodworking about the Studley tool chest:

i would love to build a toolbox that i could wheel out of my van and bump upstairs or across rough groun d and have everything at hand

i built one about 15 ys ago but the wheels were too small , it was too heavy and eventually fell apart

Mike, yes, I have seen that book, and have always wanted to order it. My birthday is coming up so maybe I will buy myself a present. :D

I just pulled out an old issue of Fine Woodworking from almost 20 years ago, and I re-read the article by a woodworker that detailed the toolbox he made for all his handtools. It was a box that sits on the floor and has all sorts of compartments and so forth inside. The intereseting thing is that this woodworker works with hand tools only and uses no electric power for anything. Except for a work bench and a few other things, he was able to do anything with the tools in one box that is approx. 3 feet X 3 feet X 2.5 feet.

It was this kind of thing that inspired me when I was a young man, and I really wanted to become a woodworker and cabinet maker. As is the case with many of us, "Life" intervenes and we end up following a different course. Now, with the many responsibilities of a business and employees, and a wife/mortgage/children, I don't have the abiltiy to follow the dream anymore.

Many say that they'd never work again if they won the lottery or otherwise because wealthly. For me...I'd work my bum off learning these kinds of skills and the money-be-damned.

that's some gear norm's got. i used to watch him years ago on sky and was impressed by him but i thought he made it look easy because he had all the power tools. looks like i was wrong

Hi Mike, I've talked to some folks that have worked with Norm, and they assure me that the is The Real Deal. With Norm, there is none of the tv-fakery BS that is on a lot of those home shows.
