We've switched to a newer higher spec server recently and it's caused some issues as we transferred over forums over a 9 month period. During that time a load of forums have got a load busier (amarok and sparky forums mainly) and when we made the final move over, we've realised we're already loading the new server too much.
Hence the server struggling last night which I'm sure some of you spotted.
We're installing some software to help with caching for all visitors that are unregistered (all registered and logged in visitors are cached by the database) which should help a lot.
We'll run that for a couple of days while we configure it, and if we don't see drastic improvements, we'll be putting the databases with the highest loads onto a server of their own which will spread the load over more CPU's.
We're also considering sticking extra CPU's in the existing server along with all the above which will help with the continued growth and prevent this from happening again.
So I apologise for the downtime and hope there will be very little, if any at all, while we set all this up and configure it.
