Ive just been to price a Galley kitchen 5 sqm shes been quoted £150 quid to lay 316 x 316 tiles from Wickes inc grout and addy. (she hasnt bought them yet).

She also wants the kitchen plinths cut down and ply laid as its a tongue and grove floorboard.

So I know the ball park for the tiles themselves at 150 which im happy with as its a days work tops. However what to charge for cutting down plinths and door?

Also what do you normal use to hide the step between floors as there will be a 1inch difference approx.

also these wickes tiles anyone used them before cos I reckon ill get a better tile from tile giant etc and im sure at a competitive price - HINT HINT ;)

Wickes *–*Tiles*–*Floor Tiles*–*Ceramic Tiles*–*Vesuvio Ceramic Floor Tiles

so to recap.

1. £150 to lay 5 sq metres of tiles inc addy and grout (grey) is that a honest price?

2. Cutting down plinths and doors - do you and how much?
(I feel i need to to get business)

3. Ply - how much do you charge to lay this and how much do you pay for it?

4. what to bridge gap and height difference between rooms.

Many thanks

Ken

If someones doing it for £150 inc mats, ply and cutting down some plinths etc let them mate,

Id be looking day and a half to be honest, maybe im slow.

first day to seal and lay play and tile, early finish then back the morning after to do trimming and grout.

Ply 12mm WBP about £45
Addy, Grout, Silicon £20
Primer for ply and screws couple of quid.

Say £70 mats, is only leaving you with £80 labour, for a day or a day and a bit if your slow like me.

Whilst shes at wickes tell her to get a door profile for mixed height floors.

Those cheapo tiles can be a bit of a pain aswell, there often but not always, not square and dished.

Id be wanting around the £275 mark i recon.

by the way i always trim doors and plinths as part of the job, but tend to base my work on a day rate rather than m2 for tiling, extra for this, extra for that. just price up your materials and work out your time allowance at the job based on your hourly/day rate and consider travelling/hassel factors ie no parking, 10th floor flat etc. add it all together and quote based on this. what you can get payed and what you want/need may not always meet up but thats a matter for you to address.

hope you get the job if you want it

i wont comment on rates, but if you do the whole job on your dayrate plus materials (and you dont put anything ontop) then that is as fair as it gets!!

but to finish the edge in the doorway get a piece of 3" x 1" and bullnose 1 end stick this onto the exterior floor with gripfill, and throw a couple of screws in countersunk, 2 part fill the holes and paint! JOB DONE!
