Going off times grout and adhesive

I have posted a comment in jeff the tillers thread regarding this but thought I should start a new thread rather than take over someone elses.

Can you do anything to speed up the setting time of adhesive and grout other that using warm water?

Is there anything you can use to retard the setting time of rapid set? I know in plastering you can mix a bit of baking powder in with the plaster to slow it down if you have a big ceiling etc. is there something similar for adhesive?

I know you can mix bonding in with finish to speed it up but don't know of anything you could mix with rapid to speed it up.

If I want an adhesive thats sets a bit quicker than my usual Keraquick I'd choose Ardex X7R. I find Mapei UCP goes off nice n quick.

Dont know if they still do it but a 2 or 3 years ago BAL introduced Variset. The retarder came in a separate bottle so you could choose your own setting time from as little as 5 minutes to ..... erm cant remember. I only used it once though.

Webber rapid flex is quick, and i think white is quicker than grey (don't know why)

It breaks all rules from Addy manufacturers but boil the kettle and use hot water for adhesive.. sets like the clappers.... but as above we do have variset for this now.. as for grout.. then UCP from mapei sets fast anyway... but slowing down .. only cold can do that..

Pee in it, stinks but sets like the clappers, well thats what me old boss used to say, same in winter when u had cold hands "p#ss on em craig. Warms em up lad" i did, it did warm em up, but blinking stinks and stings in cuts and grazes

As a side note, does everyone clean the bucket of addy out after every mix? I normally wash the bucket and the trowels I'm using after every mix and keep my hands, tiles and trowel handles clean as I go. think I'm OCD!

I wash my bucket out after say ever third mix..

Every mix for me as well, I find it easier and quicker. Bucket, trowel, etc

I suppose it is how often you mix, if the addy is starting to set in the bucket , then i wash out as hydration is heating up , so will affect new mixes, but if cracking on like large floors, then i don;t wash every mix.

Im with dave ,large areas wash out every few mixes or if they are little bits ie like the trav bathrooms im doing at the mo, 2 full tiles, run downstairs cut 2 run back fit em, ect ect its after every mix
