grout/sealant questions

Hi.

I've tiled two adjacent walls above my showerbath and have a couple of questions regarding the grouting/sealing.


1) I've attached pic of how the tiles have been fixed in the corner and then a diagram of how I think the sealant should be compacted into the cavity in the corner. I read that grout should not be used in corners so I'm guessing I should try to fill as much of the cavity with sealant as poss ?

2) I was intending to use masking tape to stop the sealant going where it shouldn't, and will use a lightspraying of washing-up liquid and my finger to smooth it all out. Is this an acceptable way of doing it?

3) When I then remove the tape, won't the removal cause the sealant to lift up a tiny bit where it overlaps on to the tape? Do I smooth this down or just leave it ?

4) I have a tube of BAL and a tube of UNIBOND sealant. Which is best to use? They both say anti-mould etc. etc.

Hi Petey

1) if you want to have a go at compacting the sealant into the cavity you can have a try. i've never done it myself so not sure how successful it will be but it won't do any harm I guess to fill the gap as much as possible.

2) yep, that's the way I do it

3) not sure myself. never really noticed it. i've tended to tape it off, seal and then whip off the tape. maybe one of the other guys can give their view?

4) personal choice I guess. A lot of guys on here use specific brands and manufacturers that they trust. I have in the past bought unibond products from diy outlets but they've never lasted particularly long. i now use Buildfix sealants and they are manufactured by Mapei.

Hi pal, the corner tiles should overlap eachother, I don't use masking tape at all, just don't cut the nozzle to large,

Just wet your finger with clean water,

And I would use the bal, everyone has there own ways, but it works well for me

There is no need to compact Silicon all the way in like that IMO..

Neat siliconing takes practise and for those not competent at it then it is worth trying Corner tape.
