handmade tiles to fix...need advice

Hello folks.

We have chosen an ambitious project for our first forray into tiling. I have a handmade tile 'herb panel' from Welbeck tiles for our splashback behind cooker.

What I know so far:

Need to seal thepainted walls with something (our floor tiler left us with something to seal with)

sanded grout - found some online instructions (fired earth) that said to use this for handmade tiles

need to butter up back of tiles

got some instructions on measuring out first and putting baton into wall to rest first row on


don't know:

what depth comb to get, assuming something smaller rather than larger

anything else I haven't thought of?

any particular sort of grout


hopefully my info I have so far isn't nonsense, but any advice is welcome.

Get rid of the paint first....

I've fixed these tiles. Apart from the earlier advice to remove the paint, I'd recommend you lay them all out dry first on a table. Being all odd sized, it helps when you come to stick them on the wall. I'd use an 8mm notch trowel and grout with Mapei Ultracolor Plus. You'll need some 2mm spacers and also wedges as the gaps wont be uniform.

similar but with white grout so uneven joints not so pronounced.

Thanks for your reply folks. I have seen that grout, thanks for the tip. I thought I had read somewhere about no spacers and butting up the tiles to each other but can't remember where I read it now. That looks lovely timeless John, love the Aga too!

The ones I fixed were cream and I used Jasmine grout. You can't butt the tiles because they're all different sizes. I'll put up a picture if I can find out how to do it.

Don't butt them up, different sizes and shapes space as best as you can.
