Hi all,

Currently looking at redundancy in the new year only been here two years so no fat cheque either. I have rennovated about 5 houses over the last three years and have many contacts in different trades, developers, plumbers, site managers etc. Should I make the move and go self employed, lots of help and advice needed.

What is an average year end salary, recommend a training course anyone, tools of the trade.................................

Thanks in advance.

I know alot of the answers are in the forums that I will read once I have access but the potential earnings is my most important question.

Welcome to the forums Jimbob. No such thing as an average year end salary when you are self employed I am afraid. You can only take out what you have earned. If you don't earn enough you can't take much, unless you have a good bank manager to support you for a year or two.

Your earnings potential depends on a lot of things, such as:

Where you are based,
How much competition there is,
What demand there is for your services
How good you are at taking business from established competition
How good a business person you are
Finally how good a tiler you are to build a reputation.

Not wanting to put a dampener on things but the earnings potential can not really be summarised, it really is entirely up to the individual and their circumstances.

Tiling as a job; there is much satisfaction to be had from the end product and happy customers. Don't go into the trade just because of a "perceived" income level, very dangerous in my opinion.

If you take the plunge, best of luck, every one on here will help as much as we can.

Wow people, I am overwhelmed by the flow of free and helpful advice, genuinelly appreciated. My situation is that I am 31 with a small family to support. Through my contacts in the property market, mainly my best friend who is a site manager for Stamford I think I could generate some good income. My fears are two fold, borrowing to start the business and gaining work quickly in the early days to pay the mortgage, I will definetly need to attend a training course and will definetly take you all up on the offer of advice.
