Hi there.
I'm about to start tiling my bathroom. Done a bit of tiling before so I think I know the basics.
My question is about the preparation...... Just re boarded three walls of my bathroom and had the walls skimmed. I was going to wait about a week before sealing the plaster and only when its obviously dry.
I'll be sealing it with the matt emulsion mix with 1/10th water added but I was wondering whether I will need to do this on the walls which I intend to tile (around the bath and shower only). Will sealing these walls in thi way cause any problems with the tile adhesive or will it make the adhesion stronger?? Or would it be better to paint the PVU mix onto the intended tiling wall rather than the emulsion mix??

Hi and welcome..

A mist coat or PVA is not what to use..

If you are using a tubbed dispersion adhesive then brush the walls down and tile.. if using a cement based adhesive then you need an acrylic primer...

Also what size tiles are you using.?

Haven't actually picked the tiles yet, or rather my wife hasn't!! We'll be going for something in the region of 18 X 12. I'm only tiling around the bath and shower, the rest of the bathroom will just be painted. I was originally intending to use a tub based adhesive but I'll be just as happy to use powder if necessary. I was just concerned that sealing the skimmed plaster with emulsion my prevent the adhesive grabbing properly. Thanks for the prompt reply by the way.....

Ok, you need to use a suitable acrylic primer as you will need a cement based adhesive for that size tile.. Acrylic primer will prevent ettrignite reaction between the cement adhesive and the gypsum undercoat.. follow priming directions on the bottle.

leave the areas to be tiled free of your emulsion mix , if using a cement based adhesive try and prime areas to be tiled with the same brand primer as adhesive which shold be an acrylic primer no pva mapei keraquick with mapei primer g should suffice
