Hello!Help!Marley Tiles

Hello everyone

New to tiling and really would appreciate advice. I am tiling a floor in a downstairs cloakroom. I have taken up all old ceramic tiles and they were layed onto Marley tiles the floor is level and in reasonable condition as I've manged to get off all the adhesve. What can I do to prep for the the new floor tiles client not keen on Marley tiles been ripped up and they were obviously tiled over before with no problems or complaints for the last 7 years. The advice on here does sometimes contradict from one tiler to another, but any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

hi are the existing tiles glossy
and welcome to the forum

I think they may have been glossy when they were first laid 40 years ago but now they are matt

most adh manufactures now state that the gloss or glaze has to be ground off first
with the amount of dust that causes it would be easier to remove existing tiles ,whats the substrate

Substrate is concrete. This is a job for my mother-in-law and although I am new to tiling I want to do a good job for her as I would for any clients I intend to do work for.

if your new to the game best to remove tiles .
until you gain enough experience to know what to look for (no disrespect intended)

Never dealt with these.Have been reading up on them.If you decide to remove,try do get them up as a whole tile.It seems they contain asbestos.If this is incorrect im sure someone will correct me.

They are filled and honed Travertine and I have used Hg Impregnator prior to fitting. Is it also advisable to use the impregnator again prior to grouting. I have checked the tiles and even dropped a couple of drops of water in a corner to make sure the water sat on the top and did not disappear into the tiles. So I think I've used the Impregnator correctly.

Hi and:welcome:If you have impregnated the tiles prior to fixing, you should be OK to lay them and then impregnate them again after grouting.

PS. you could use slc (self leveling compound) to prep the concrete

Thanks for info regarding the Impregnator. The Marley tiles are all intact and I've found a Bal product called Bal Bond, which seems to indicate that it would be fine to go over the Marley tiles with then use a good adhesive to fix the new tiles with. Everyone seems to think that taking up the Marley tiles is the way forward though..... appreciate your advice as your work looks fantastic also big thanks to everyone else who has been kind enough to comment:smilewinkgrin:
