Help needed with laying quartz floor tiles

Getting ready to lay about 3m of floor quartz sparkle tiles.
Done a bit of tiling in the past but these look a different kettle of fish.
Any advice much appreciated.
Intending to lay over my original 300 x 300 ceramic floor tiles, which are nice and level and well stuck down.
Under them are floorboards with thin ply sheet, but well stuck down for the last x 15 years.
Would make a mess if dig them up.

Would this be possible or do I have to dig them up and put new ply down ?

Also any advice on adhesive and trouts, forum mention latex adhesive s2 type.
Would this be bought from a tile outlet.
I assume you can tubs of this ready mixed.
Also any advice on best grout to use in a bathroom.

No under floor heating just a towel rail radiator.

Evening Cammie, a couple of questions if you don't mind. How thick is the ply under your existing ceramic tiles and is the old floor showing any signs of deflection (bounce)?

Ply not that thick 3or 4 mm, onto floarboards. All pretty solid jumped about a bit, not much movement that I noticed.
Nice and level.
Original tiles which would be thinner than the the new ones are intact.

So I presume that would indicate no movement issues.

That ply is too thin. 15mm is BS or use a Tile backerboard 6mm.

wouldn't recommend to fit expensive tiles over old ceramics, tiled on thin ply,
just remove it, it's only 3 sq/m, I would use for these tiles something like mapei keraquick with latex plus,

I really can't advise anything other than a rip out I'm afraid, the existing ply is way too thin (BS minimum recommendation is 15mm) and putting tiles of that weight over the top is going to run the risk of overloading the floor weight wise. If it were my job I would remove the old tiles and ply, ensure the floorboards are screwed down and deflection free, overboard with 6mm cement board (glued with flexible tile adhesive and screwed also) then tile using flexible adhesive (same used to stick cement boards down with) and grout.

to add to above, yes use a suitable S2 adhesive for agglomerate tiles..

Used some Mapei Granirapid the other day, thats a good adhesive.

hiya cammie,as above advice although your floor has been ok so far the ply isnt thick enough and adding more to that i wouldnt advise

i would remove it.check floor is ok then sheetw ith 6mm cement boards and then tile

i would use mapei granirapid or elastorapid

As above for me, Ply way to thin, you have been lucky your floor has lasted. But adding the extra weight could be the straw that broke the proverbial's back. Sorry, take the advice of the pro's

Looks like I'll be lifting the existing ones then, never heard of cement boards before.
I take it they would be available from tile supplier, going out tomorrow to get my wall tiles.
What kind of cost should I be paying for these ?

Which suppliers do you have in your area? Hardiebacker 250 is readily available and should cost you no more than £15 per sheet, which is 1 m2.
