You need to consider your key focal points first, i.e. cooker / cooker hood. Make sure that your tiles sit even in the cooker hood recess and then check where your cuts will fall around sockets, into corners etc, trying to avoid "slithers" (you may have to make some minor adjustments to gain an aesthetically pleasing look). Remember that there will usually be a microwave / toaster / bread maker or something else placed in the corners so don't stress too much at keeping the look of a full
tile flowing around the corners like you would in a bathroom.
As for the vertical setting out, try to avoid small cuts, a full
tile off of the worktop usually looks best but if you end up with rubbish cuts at a window cill or plug socket etc, then try a half
tile off the worktop. Remember to find the lowest part of the worktop before you get carried away with your measurements, too.
Try to leave a 2mm gap between worktop and bottom of
tile and fill it with Silicon, not grout.
