Help to settle an argument - which first

Hi, the arguments about tiling the floor before the walls, when using the same tile and your lining the joints up ?

The floors about 5sqm, walls 25sqm 60x30cm porcelain. I would normally always lay the floor first in this scenario, as you guarantee matching the joints on both wall and floor. I know if they don't need to line up, walls can go up first and if the rooms small enough you can set lines out.
The boss of the plumbing firm I was doing the job said he'd never come across anyone doing it that way before, personally I was amazed, which way round do other tilers do it ?

Surely it's not that uncommon, is it !

Nope , why does it matter, floor 1st easier if your matching lines

As a norm I would do the floor first but it depends on tile type , you don't want to be working on a nice polished marble floor lol..


ive just done a 20 odd mtr bathroom and did the walls first , then floor , just a case of making sure you set out ok ..

How's it easier to line both up if floor is done first?i don't get that

If you do the walls first, you have to measure and mark the floor attempting to work out EXACTLY where each joint will line up for each opposing wall.

If you do the floor first you already have all the joint lines to match up on each separate wall.

Gotcha,I have always just set out properly and done the walls first

Generally walls first for me but I leave off the bottom cut, then floor, then put in the cuts. Don't like working on top of a finished floor so avoid it necessary.

If you are attempting to joint bond all 4 walls and floor, and assuming the wall and floor joints are going to be the same width, then it may be a case of doing 2 walls then the floor then the other 2 walls.
Nowt worse than seeing the joints not match up by a few millimetres!

I would do the floor 1st then plumb my walls up off the grout lines.
As TJ says nothing worse than a mm or 2 out on the joins.

totally agree John, that's the way I've always done it. Foolproof method for me.

Usually do walls first , but then usually think , should really do floor first , foolproof!
