We have just bought an old house and got the keys at the weekend. We spent all day Sunday ripping out the dog/cat infested carpets, and were delighted to find most of the downstairs is tiled. My wife seems to think that they are Red Quarry tiles, but having read some other posts it maybe that they are terracotta. The tiles are in a reasonable condition (none broken), but are very dirty, and have carpet glue covering the outer edges and a strip down the middle.

I have a couple of questions:

1. How do we tell the difference between quarry and terracotta tiles?
2. What would be the best way to clean/remove the glue? We have seen some chemical products online, but dont want to damage the tiles
3. There is a strip of concrete in one room approx 4ft x 1/2 ft, and we want to lay tiles there. The house is in Gainsborough, Lincs, anyone local who supplies reclaimed tiles.
4. How do i go about laying the tiles, being a psychologist I will need an idiots guide. Alternatively, any local tradesmen on here that would be interested in the job? We would also like to lay the same tiles in the small front porch - currently a concrete base.

I am waiting for my good wife to email some pictures to me so that I can post, as I realise this will help with the first question. But any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Simon.

Welcome to the forum Simon,

As you say pictures will help to identify your tiles although I will hazard a guess at quarry tiles. Terracotta are usually all different shades and will probably be sealed with oils. Are your tiles all the same colour?

Cleaning will be a slow process but the end results can be superb. There are a few floor cleaning specialists on the forum that will advise as to the best procedure to follow.
