Help with installing Hardiebacker500

Hi,

Really appreciate some input here....I'm stuck !

Hardiebacker500 boards have to be fixed "15mm from the edges...of sheets". So, where I am butting sheets, the line of fixings on each sheet will be 30mm apart - plus 3mm for the gap I need to leave between sheets - a total of 33mm (between lines of fixings).

My studwork is supposed to be 4x2 - and in mm comes out at 90x38.

Given the lines of fixings are 33mm apart - and the studs are 38mm wide, there's not only a couple of mm of wood outside each fixing.

Is this right ? Do I have the wrong size studding ?! Or do I need to "double-up the studs ? Or something else ?

Have you had the stud work built specifically for the hardi boards or was there plasterboard on it previously?

At the moment there is no studwork - it's a new [dividing] wall. I was going to just build it with 400mm centres - but then realised that would give me potential problems fixing the Hardiebacker...

So before I build anything, I though I'd best check whetehr there's some peculiar requirement.

I think its just to stop the screws 'pulling' through the edge of the board. If im honest i didnt even know about the 15mm and have always fitted them to normal stud work and fixed them close enough to the edge of the boards to get a join on one stud.

Thanks very much Scottley. It just seemed odd to me that although the 15mm requirement is clearly specified in the installation guide, using google, I couldn't find anyone else had ever questioned it. At least it was a valid question !

i've never fixed Hardie to walls, only floors
But doesn't the 15mm instruction mean distance from the wall when on the floor?

I know when I am fixing plasterboard and the stud is on the limit of the "right distance" I often angle the screw slightly towards the centre of the stud so that at least its going into the wood properly. Not sure if this is an option with Hardi?

The edge thing is so it dos'nt break away when screwing onto stud work, the same as plasterboard

predrilling and countersinking the holes will help too.

you can pre drill the holes, and if need be angle them, but it will be time consuming aim to go straight in if at all possible, play with your drills torque settings, take it to a really low setting, and click up until the grip is snug enough for a good grip but not to much that it blows the edge away.

I'm basing this on fitting out electrical generator rooms that have to be fireproofed, never heard of the 15mm, but it makes sense in terms of the boards structure, get the right drill torque, and blast away! we used to use a fire retardant glue ( like Gripfill ) not sure about use in a domestic situation? it'd be a bugger to get off in the future if needed.
