Ok hello to everyone, first visit here and a good site but theres so much info i,m a bit lost.

This is a DIY project, i have my own paving company so i would hope that tiling is second nature :drool5: i have laid many different types of stone from proper granite setts to 25mm thick granite strips, i can turn my hand BUT the job has to look perfect so i,m here to ask a few questions i am stuck on.

first the floor
i want to lay 600x400 travertine in strecther at 45 degrees, existing sub floor is concrete screed, i am not sure on the quality of the floor? - should i pour some leveling screed over it to take any dips away? if so what?

what adhesive- just any flexible white?

seal tiles first? again whats the stuff to use?

grout with what?

seal after installation?

The walls:
just want to do something like 200x100 in strecher, will be approx 400mm high around worktops. walls are plaster on the crappest render you have ever seen, i only just moved in and have been ripping the loose plaster off all week, it all seems sound now and am having the damaged stuff skimmed. Existing tiles were a 100x100 ceramic and were fine (until i started scraping off the plaster :incazzato: )
So anything else i should know?

Hi & :welcome:

Is the concrete screed sound/solid and not crumbling?

If there is a need for SLC I would go for the 2 part Mapei Latexplan.
Adhesive I would use either Mapeker Flexi white or Keraquick
As you've not laid Travertine before it's wise to seal them 1st, I'd go for LTP Mattstone or LTP Colour Enhancer depending on the finish you preferred.
Grout with Mapei Ultracolour Plus Beige (131)
After installation, give them 2 further coats of sealer.

As for your walls, it doesn't sound like you've got much to worry about. I'd use a standard tubbed adhesive (Mapestik) and Ultracolour grouts

Thanks for the reply

i have not inspected the floor yet, the areas i have looked at look solid- if there are any cracks in the screed then what do i do there? is that a problem?
I am under the impression that the floor is quite recent.

I also forgot to mention that some of the area to be covered is in a conservatory- will that make any difference?

with regard to the wall, do i need to worry much about the weight of the tile if i,m only going 400mm high? when the plasterer does those walls is it wise to simply not polish those areas?

This is my paving site www.williamspaving.co.uk

so any questions about paving i will gladly answer :8:

I forgot to mention that i have actually laid travertine before- but on a patio- it was just 30mm thick and i didnt recomend it to the guy but he pretty much demanded it :prrr: it was unfiilled but diamond sawn and it did look stunning, i havenet heard back from him so i can only assume its ok....
