Hi all, just a quickie, I have just spent 5 days tiling a close family members kitchen only 8 m2 with just a couple of hours prep work. I sealed before tiling with APD and the tiles were difficult work, sheets of stone mosaic which all went through the wet cutter,( yes every cut and all sheets had to be dried as the backing holds water before fixing.), Further to this epoxy grout was used for the whole job at the request of the family member. I also purchased a Marcrist diamond blade as my standard blade was not up to the job, although the Marcrist will give me future use, (it was £70 by the way), I still got it special for the job.
 It was up there with the hardest job I have ever done......now comes the problem. Obviously I need to charge something but also dont want to be non family orientated.... So, can somebody throw me a ball park figure for this with all things considered because whatever I think seems to be wrong.

I am doing my Sisters bathroom next month. Will only be charging for materials and anything special that is required. She was expecting to pay me the going rate but she has been good to me in the passed (keep the comments clean guys!) so my time will be free.

How you approach this is very difficult and each family group have different ideas how things like this should be treated, some families expect everything for free, some expect to pay a going rate, after all, it is your line of business (isn't it?) and if you have spent 5 days working there, that is 5 days of income lost somewhere else.

Maybe point out what it would have cost someone else to have the job done by you and what it would have cost to have someone else do the same job. As an indicator, I did a similar job recently, much smaller than yours around 2m2 with standard grout and I billed £250. was only a day and a half.

If I had done the work for example my labour for that job would have been at least £750 plus materials plus specially bought diamond blade and the fact that you used epoxy grout.

I recently did 24sqm kitchen/dining room for my best mate in diamond set, said he'd pay the going rate.He got the tiles and I bought all the materials for him at cost.Took me 3 days plus I saved him 3 boxs of tiles and the self leveling compound(£30). I worked till 10 o'clock 2 nights aswell.I asked for £200 plus the £65 for materials, his girlfriend thought I was joking. In the end I got £100 after 2 months of doing the job, don't forget £65 was spent on materials so that meant I earnt £35 for the job.
Never do work for mates,I don't mind helping out but I had other work on.They nearly all want something for nothing.I would have charged about £800 for that job.

You've been warned!

Aye it's a difficult 1. Watching the footie on Saturday with ma m8's in the pub, 1 of them said he was needing his bathroom tiled. Approx 22m2. Was only willing to pay £100 and no more saying he would help me. I wonder if he's started it yet? . It's your lively hood m8. I could have done with the work as just starting out, but you do it to cheap for 1 and then all your friends and family will want it done really cheap.

close family ie mum and dad gran aunts stuff like that then do it for nothing just material costs and as long as it is nothing to special and the job will be fitted in when i have time. for friends it is a totally different story charge the going rate as they will want the world it is your business after all if you charge them less and you could have been doing a full paying job think how you would feel. over the years i have done favours for people my sparky who i have known for a long time asked me to tile his bathroom gave him the price which was the going rate he was happy 2 days later involved i a bad car crash broken pelvis anyway long story short he wasnt working for about two three months and his misses was getting onto him about the tiling not being done as he told me to leave it as money would be tight as he was not working fair enough, but he called in a favour from me and i done it for just the materials on the understanding that he owed me one back, moved into a new house two years ago 47m2 ufh 3 stats wired up by him , wiring up the sound system in the kitchen dinning room living room hall fitting all the speakers and the amps 7 new downlighters in the bathroom all done because i did him a favour
