In a room with 4 walls you'd measure the height and width of each wall individually and multiply them to give you the square meter total for each individually.

You'd then add them up to give you the total room square meterage.

And your linear meters are simply your widths, individually or as a total.... say for borders.

You can also measure a linear meter run for borders on floors etc.
