How did you get into tiling ?

I have done a small amount a few years ago and enjoyed doing it. IO know that my work is still holding out and doing the job (tiled a shower section of a bathroom).

Now i left school with no qualifications and went straight for the money as alot of school leavers do. 10 years later and i regret not spending a few years on a low wage and having a trade, good job and money on my side.

So im going to do something about it !!!!! Unfortunatley i cant afford to be on a low wage due to a family, house and other commitments. Im also unable to obtain a loan due to not paying bills some years ago.

So how did you do it ? Any advise you could throw my way would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance

JP

I would reccomend doing it part time to begin mate. Small jobs ofcourse whiclst holding a full time job. Offer a low day rate or fixed price for the job. Wait to see if thing pick up and when they do try to move down to a part time job and start to foccus on your tiling.

Once you feel your tiling is up to scratch, start to distribute some cards to local builder, estate agents, property deveopers etc and consider a website and some advertising if finances permit.

Now I am not yet tiling full time but I have started up in business before and what I have reccomended is very similar to what I did. Difference being that I found it very hard due to having to employ a mate for transport reasons as I didn't drive.

you will need to save up and get yourself on a course and once you have done this then your first few jobs will pay for the course and some tools, you really need some money behind you though m8 so you will need to economise for a while to raise the capital.

your local job centre can send you on a tiling cource or you can pay your self ortheast tiling is a good one thats the one I used

I had been thinking about a change for a long time i work in an office but i prefare working with my hands.I was in my mums office in the house one day and i seen tiling invoices (she does accounts for a building company) and that got me thinking about it,so i said to my mum about it and the tiler that does work for the builder does the training course.

Im still in my own job and tiling part time but i hope to go full time into tiling by the summer

As brian c says you will need some money to get yourself started, but try and buy the best tools you can afford

I also left school / college with "average" quals and found myself working. Several years passed and I ended up in senior field sales - nice Audi, good salary etc but also 50k miles a year, having to put up with idiot senior management, lots of time away from the wife and kids and lots of late nights stuck on the M6. Finally ground me down and I resigned!

I jumped in right at the deep end. Within 3 weeks I had my tools, van, Yell.com advert, cards etc. My first job came from findtrustedtradesmen.com and since then I can honestly say I've not been without work. Financially I've only noticed a slight difference (I was on 30k+) although I am working my sack off!!!

I've not done any courses but have tiled FOC for friends and family for about 10 years. Make sure you work hard and to a very high standard, get a good professional image - cards / workwear etc and I don't think you can go far wrong!

It's not easy to start with and is nerve-wracking, but self-belief and confidence goes a long way. Coupled with the expert advice you can pick up from the bods on here and it will be hard to go wrong. Being self employed is brilliant. I wish I'd had the bottle to do it a couple of years ago when I first started thinking about it.

All the best......!
