How do I tile uneven walls

I am needing to tile an uneven wall, I have noticed the tiles kicking out What should I need to do to make life easier?

Old plaster, and 10x8 I think?

Take off the old plaster then d&d plasterboard to get a nice flat surface.

if its concrete wall, has bumpy surface and the water-proof coating applied, whats can be done to flatten the wall surface before tiling?
