The Legend; Phil Hobson RIP

Just wondered how far you guys/gals travel? without getting digs. At the moment I am driving One and three quarter hours each way. In the past I have travelled longer distances, but this journey is a nightmare winding country lanes etc. You can't take your eyes off the road for one second.

I know I am getting on a bit, but I am completely knackered every night. I might be tempted to stay over a couple of nights next week. I am leaving Oldham at 6.15 am to arrive in Ashbourne at 8.00am. We are putting in a good days work. But I think three and a half hours a day driving, is a bit much. Does anyone travel further?

I have done Preston daily, about 160 miles round trip, I will travel anywhere Phil but its usually digs. Love being in London, usually stay in the Parkside hotel on the seven sisters road.

The longest i think i have done was from West Midlands to Newcastle...tiled lobby to shop and drove home....had to stop on the services for a kip though.

Phil the traffic in the Washington DC area is really, really horrible. I don't even start getting cranky until I have been driving for at least an hour-pretty much everywhere I go it's going to be at least an hour or so. I've had days that the traffic was so bad that it took 2-3 hours to make it to the job or to make it home.:incazzato::mad2:

But a steady 1 3/4 hour trip like you are having now would make me want to stay for the night at least a few nights a week. Driving isn't fun anymore for me the way it was when i was younger.

I love my bed too much, lol.
i drove 1.5 hours both ways on a big job last year! left home at 6.30am and left site at 6pm every day.I'm not 40 yet so it was ok for me.
3 years ago i was working about 2 hours away and i had another tiler with me and i booked us into a lovely B&B for 4 nights a week, problem was the B&B was in a beautiful small typically Irish small town full of pubs:yikes:
It was some craic, beer and grub in pub/restaurant every night,mmmmm:8:
Took us a month to complete but turned out amazing thankfully:thumbsup:
My van is close to 3 years old and i have 32000 miles on,that shows how far i usually go,lol

Hi Phil ,too much!! It will suck the life out of you, only ever did when I was younger silly then, ( had to get home to wifey) lol..Look at the petrol the strain on you & the free time you loose every way is a cost to you ... Take a break, book digs closer & enjoy your time away... Less work ,less travelling less wear & tear on the motor.Even a bit more work done in less time? And you get to the job fresh , Brilliant!! Then when you go home:hurray:..Don't do it Mr...

i look at it like this....

i will travel upto an hour in each direction on a daily basis
1 week per month i would be willing to drive 1 1/2 hours each way, after that its digs.

i have worked all over the country since 1985 and its the travelling that gets you down more than anything..also with the cost of fuel and traffic jams, things are not as economically viable as much as what they were.

i would still work away though, but with 3 kids and a demanding wife, i would only do 1 month away in every 4 but it would have to be worth it and with the amount of people out there now,, its rare you get the big hits anymore....the world is a small place compared to 20-30 yrs ago now!

I hate travelling so restrict my area to 45mins in each direction, Stretched to an hour in school hols as traffic is lighter and i can work longer as the other half can look after the kids.
Pre kids i worked anywhere!

Phil, there's some cracking B&B's and little hotels in Leek I can recommend. And there's quite a big hotel in Ashbourne, it has a gym and a swimming pool.... they don't usually have such luxuries out in the sticks

I worked in Bournemouth many years before M25 and that only worked out at 120 miles and I got digs.

Your knackered before you start work on that kind of mileage Phil
