I don't know where the Quote from 'frogeye' went about being a Public forum and not airing mistakes in public!

If no one made mistakes it would be a perfect world!

In 36 years I will have tiled on chipboard, PVA, thin plywood etc and everything else that was recommended and approved at that time!
I also remember when they put all soil pipes internal in blocks of flats and boarded them with ASBESTOS sheets!

Times change and progress is made.

The thing is with chipboard, is it is a compressed material and basicly just chippings and IMHO not stable enough to tile directly too...deffo needs some sort off over boarding..

I have always had the same opinion that tiling onto chipboard is wrong and would possibly result in a comeback at a later date. I have recently however been thinking to myself if manufacturers are naming a particular product as being suitable then surely it must be as they spend lots of money researching this.

It would be good if a rep or techi guy from one of these manufacturers could reply and tell us what makes there product suitable for tiling over chipboard.

reps & techi guys, can you comment?

Adhesives do get better and better....i agree...but chipboard is chipboard and adhesive is only sticking to the surface, so be it a 1 part S2 or a 2 pack S2 or even an elastomeric adhesive like fast flex...it don't matter it is still chipboard the same product whether it is standard flexible or super super flexible adhesive...it is an unstable substrate and hates water..

I would be very interested in hearing any argument from a company that suggest chipboard is suitable for tiling over or why there product is suitable.

I agree exactly with what you said there Dave and its a very good point. Manny adhesives will stick to a tile and to a timer substrate. Manufacturers should just say all of there flexible adhesive will stick to Chipboard rather highlighting a specific product as being suitable for tiling over chipboard. By saying that something is suitable for tiling over chipboard manufacturers in my opinion are implying that chipboard is safe to tile to.

I promose to stop ranting lol, I have just been thinking about this recently and wanted some opinions from others.

thanks for the replies guys. I did suspect that many peeps do this as there are products on the market for tiling over chipboard. I realy just wanted to hear if it does work, from experienced tilers who have done it.

I hope that my earlier post was not taken out of context!
As technical advances occur over time and improvements are made with adhesives it is possible to tile onto wooden substrates with some degree of confidence.
However the very nature of chipboard - being open pored and liable to expansion when moisture is present - would surely make it one of the most unreliable surfaces along with hardboard that you could consider fixing tiles too.
From the replies you have received up to now I could not concur that many do tile on chipboard and from my own personal experience of repairing others work I would have to conclude that a professional tile fixer working in the domestic market would never consider tiling direct to chipboard!

As I said before I have always been against tiling onto the stuff. I some I would have also said this in previous posts in the past.

I guess to cut a long story short AVOID LIKE THE PLAQUE!

same goes for tongue and groove planks.

Tooth paste helps that...
