Discuss I hope I'm wrong... in the Tile Adhesive and Grout Advice area at TilersForums.com.

Hello all. I've recently had some work done by a local company who fitted "natural stone" tiles (just using the description from the invoice as I have no idea what they are really made from) to a plasterboard surface for me as part of a bigger job they were doing.

The tiles have a natural variation in depth, so I didn't expect a flush finish on the surface of the tiles, but I didn't expect to see gaps between the back of the tiles and the surface they are attached to. I have already raised my concerns with the company, but I want to check if I was wrong to do that.

The tiles that have been finished so far are flush to the wall in some parts of the tile (usually the top) but have a fairly big gap from the wall surface at others (usually the bottom). Looking from the side or underneath a row of tiles, the gap is wide enough for me to see in to it and it looks like the tiles have been attached with large gobs of rubbery adhesive in a few spots across the tile rather than to a layer of adhesive on the wall. Is this technique acceptable when fitting tiles?

The tiles are just decorative and are not in a bathroom, kitchen or anything like that, and they will not be walked on or have any sort of real pressure applied to them. I just want to check if I have a valid complaint or if my choice of tiles, and expectations of them, is the problem. I'd appreciate your thoughts before I moan any more at someone. Thanks.
