Success is having to not advertise and live on reputation alone...If you can do that then you are doing well....IMHO..

A good reputation is very hard to earn but easy to loose....Some might say earning loads of money is success but if you have no work then the money sharp goes..

just my two penneth....

I new a brickie who I worked with 30 years ago, he was skint driving a shabby car but had plenty of talk.

He got involved with a labour hire company and worked closely with the governer, to cut a long story short he worked with one of the major agencys and had climbed the big ladder.

The moral is it's who you are not what you are, this guy was'nt the sharpist pencil in the case but he was street wise and it paid dividends.

I suppose everyone has different goals. Outside of family life mine are to owe no-one nothing (double negative) and make my own way in life without needing to depend on anyone else.
I do very much depend on other people but dont need to. I suppose along the way you just need to work harder than the next man and yep your face has to fit as well:thumbsup:

There was a saying in my old job that it was 'better to be lucky than good' but as we all know the harder you work at something the better you get!

Sucess (business wise) for me is to make other people happy with my work.

You make your own sucess in this world and if that means making sure your in the right place at the right time then so be it. But you cant be sucessful without pride and being able to hold your head high.

Good point Prem, I know alot of guys who on the face of it appear minted, financially. But their reputation locally isnt good because of all the 'wee' men they have used to get to the 'top'

As has been kind of stated, success is personal. In my case it is to earn at least my minimum target wage and enjoy myself doing it.

I can, honestly, say that I have had to work extremely hard to maintain regular employment but have thoroughly enjoyed my life as a tiler. I've been lucky with a combination or hard work and "right place at the right time".

My Dad is extremely 'successful' but has made many enemy's on his way up and now feels the pressure knowing he is very alone.

I want my family to be proud of me not resent me.

Good point Dean... Respect is earned not given.

I worked in an office for 22 years where success was face fitting not what you did and how you did it. My branch was hugely succesful (top 5 out of 150 odd branches) but my face didn't fit with those above - and I didn't want it to in the end as I could see how pathetic all the suck ups were. Now I see success as my reputation earning me a living I am happy with and a happy family life

Being in the right place at the right time?? About 12 years ago I was walking the dog across some fields in Northwich, A renovation was going on and I casually asked if they needed any tiling works doing. That conversation lead onto nearly 10 years of commercial work all over the country. A chance meeting with a customer in a tile shop brought over 3 years of shop fitting (me on the tiling) It is definately down to luck sometimes, saying yes takes your life in different directions, saying no leaves you in a cul-de-sac.

Hard Work to a high standard will always reap rewards. Eventually word of mouth brings dividends! I also agree a little luck can definately help! Cut corners and you are on a hiding to nothing. Charge what you think you are worth! I never compete with others or lower my prices. The Quote is the Quote if I don't get it I move on, I never worry about it or lose sleep over it. "Any fool can be a busy fool chasing his own tail up his own A**e"

Got to be a combination of both for me, when starting out, wife who works in the nhs, touted me at her work, got a couple of jobs straight away, priced them fairly, knowing it could open doors for me, made sure the jobs where **** on, cutting a long story short about 75% of my work has come from the inital jobs, as well as tiling I decorate and plaster so that helps, as always got to work hard to keep the standards up, and price fairly, hope this continues, i,m lucky enough to be booked up till mid feb thanks to nhs.......
