Hi all

An elderly (82 year old) neighbour of mine asked me a couple of weeks ago if I can help her out with a small tiling job. It is a repair to an original Vitorian hallway mosaic. I am a keen DIY'er but the level of skill required to do this sort of tiling is beyond me so I suggested she use a professional

Around 1m2 of tiles in the entryway has begun to break up and is now loose and potentially dangerous for her. She called a tiler off the internet - no idea who - and he gave her a price of £800 to remove the offending area (she to dispose of) and replace with as close a colour match as he can. If there is a problem with the substrate which has led to the failure this will be extra to sort.

She came round again earlier and asked me if I thought it sounded expensive. £800 for 1m2 remove and replace plus extra sounds horrific to me but I realise it is a highly skilled type of tiling.

Do you guys think the tiler is trying to exploit her or is £800 for that type of work a reasonable price.

Thanks in anticipation

Sounds expensive but it depends on the guarantees given. but for that price I would expect that he cleans up the original tiles and re-uses to give the best possible finish

Trouble is most of the existing tiles in that area are cracked and broken. It has obviously been deteriorating for some considerable time. Not sure what guarantees he offered but will ask the question. Don't think he was offering anything special though

Thanks Guys - general consensus seems to be it is on the high side but might be reasonable depending on what is being offered. Think I will tell her to get a few more quotes then look at the small print for her. Once again great help from the forums

if we do have any tilers on here, from that neck of the woods, would it be ok for them to pm you Alan, with a view to looking at the job?

Yes - no problem. Obviously can't promise anything cos she will have to be making the decision but I can act as a point of initial contact.
