is porcelain or ceramic better for kitchen floor tiles?

Personal choice, porcelain is a lot more hard wearing than ceramics.

can i get away with ceramics ande if so what thickness and do i go for unglazed

As the guys say, I would use Porcelain because it is much harder wearing

Porcelain is obviously more hard wearing, but not essential, there are tens of millions of people who have ceramic tiled kitchen floors. Just make sure you get a few spares in the event that any ever get damaged in the future : this applies to any tile !
