Hi all,

I'm doing a job next week with large ceramics so i will be using rapid set cement adhesive with large format floor trowel. The problem i've had in the past is i find working with cement adhesive quite slow as you only have 20 to 30 mins work time with each batch you mix, when you consider all the meassuring and cutting that needs doing i dont seem to get much done before it starts to go off.

What method do you guys use when tiling with rapid set?

If rapid set is umm... setting too quickly for you, then don't use rapid set, lol

I have never used rapid set, so other than don't use it if it goes off too quickly for you theres nothing else I can suggest.

If floor is small i do a dry run first, and do all my cuts then number them, then when i start i can lay it really quickly, or if its a big floor lay all the whole tiles then next day do the cuts and lay them.

No you misunderstand , its not a floor, its walls. I was using rapid set because the tiles i am using are large format so i have to use a 10mm floor trowel to ensure 100% coverage. If i use tub gear it wont dry out enough in the middle.

Whats the size and thickness your using woody1 ?

Not sure about the thickness but the tiles are aboot 1ft by 1.5ft.

just buy normal powder gear thats not rapid setting

this will sound a bit stupid but i thought all powder gear was rapid setting (30 mins work time max).

hi woody mate..use something like bal spf...it sets in 16hrs and has a very long bucket life....great for large format tiles......rapidset is good if you want same day installations but not always practical if you cant tile fast enough to use it up before it sets...so use spf and it will last ages...good luck........dave..

Phoned my local topps and they dont know of bal spf , they have a bal ctf.

any single part flexi will do woody mate...CTF3 is only a slightly modified adhesive..where as bal single part flexi is a highly modified adhesive and can be used in more situations like tiling to floors as well as walls.....as far as i know topps will be able to get bal spf but might have to order it in...I get mine from CTD is there not a branch near to you.... If I were you I'd do all the full tiles first with your first few batches,then mark and cut all the tiles you need to,mark the tiles in sequence so you know where they go then mix up a batch and just skim the back of the cut tiles and put them in place.
If your trying to just do row after row and do all the cuts as you go along you will find the mix going off cause your taking time to mark tiles and go away and cut them.

Hi Woody, I have the same problem as you as my speed is not there yet. BAL single part flexy has a bucket time of 5 hrs, so has Ardex X7G. Plenty of time normally to use it all up. I still wasted some though on my last job as there ware parts that required holes drilling and the like and with the temprature being quite high, it went off a bit quicker.

Got a big-ish job coming up next week on a floor and will be using it for that.

Mapei do a good brand you can mix up and should last you half the day.
