Hi,

I need to fix 600 x 300 x 9.5 mm ceramic tiles to plasterboard that has had the skim removed to expose the plasterboard (also in some areas the plasterboard has been plastered over).

So if I understand this thread correctly I need to:

1. Prime the plasterboard with Everbuild SBR (does it go on neat?)
2. Use Mapei Keraquick tile adhesive

For the shower area that I intend to tank will I need to apply the SBR on top and then adhere tiles or do I just tile over the tanking finish?

p.s. What area would 5L of SBR bond cover? What surface area would a 5kg bag of Mapei Keraquick cover?

5kg will cover approx 2M2. 20kg bag about 8m2. You will need to use a thin bed /solid bed trowel.

just to clarify, are you sure your tiles are ceramic and not porcelain? (just concerned about weight restrictions on skimmed plaster)

tbh, I'd be removing all the plasterboard and re-doing it for piece of mind.

For weights of tiles and weights that substrates can handle see the link, I would suggest that your substrate will not take the weight and will need to be, either stripped of plaster or over boarded and left as bare plasterboard.

Hi, yes they are ceramic.

Closer inspection reveals that its plasterboard throughout. So I can remove any plaster to expose the plasterboard and then prime it all with 1 part SBR to three parts water? Or is it better just to adhere straight to the bare plasterboard?

i have just put down similar tiles on a floor this morning and they come in at 25kg per m2! then you need to add on the weight of adhesive and grout,using a deep trowel and back skimming them will make the weight well over 30kg per m2
i would be very wary about applying them to plasterboard or anything for that matter apart from a suitable tiling board like hardiebacker

Just weighed a box of 5 (which they state covers approx 1m**2) and the weight is approx 17.1 Kg.
So if 32 Kg/m**2 is the limit for plasterboard then I should be OK.
Also there will be two mosaic borders (one approx 60mm wide and one approx 110mm wide) so that should further reduce the load.

my mistake i mis-read and thought they were 600mm2, yeah the weight should be ok,i would make sure there is no movement in the plasterboard though
