Last minute questions!

I start a small tiling job tomorrow, all set. Just two questions -

1 - Is a it OK to spread the addy with a notched trowel when there is UFH?

2 - Instructions on the addy say use a mechanical mixer, I don't have one, can I do it by hand? Will be mixing 10 kg and 2.5 litres of water.

I like to put slc on the ufh before laying tiles, the addy can be mixed by hand but hope your wrists are strong

You can mix by hand no probs.......use a piece of 2 x1 or similar.....as for troweling over ufh.....you can yes..but be very careful not to nick the cables..... do a test frequently on the ufh to check it is still ok...

what size tiles are you using..?

p.s. i use slc first.....but some don't..

Likewise, I would never tile directly onto electric UFH without self levelling first.
Try mixing a smaller amount at a time if by hand, it will be easier to mix.

Thanks for the quick responses! The UFH heating is in the screed, so I won't harm it, but I thought I read somewhere a notched trowel leaves airpockets and that is no good with UFH, maybe I am imagining that!

Tiles are 30X60 porcelain.

Has the heating been brought upto temp and then cooled down..?...


And a solid bed trowel would be good for that sized tile...

If you trowl correctly and butter the back of the tile to fill any pockets you shouldnt get air pockets

Definitely rig up a continuity test on the ufh mat whilst you are tiling Don, peace of mind if nowt else

definitely slc over the ufh and as dave says check the frequencies before / during and after the self leveling to be on the safe side but would recommend using a mixing paddle for the slc
