Laying travertine tiles onto chip board

Hi guys i would be most grateful for your help , i have a bathroom to tile , i have been looking at travertine wall tiles 60x 40 cm wall tiles , could these be laid onto the floor as well ? tile giant have quoted me
5 x 20kg bags keraquick white
3 ultracolour jasmin
3 x 1 litres 3 in total ltp colour intensifier for £190

I have a tiler popping round tomorrow to give me a quote and i have been reading the forum and trying to find whats best to lay trav tiles onto to chipboard , some say use ply 6mm 9mm 12mm some say use hardibacker 6 mm 9mm e.t.c

Whats the best thing to place over the chipboard , if ply can be done some people say pva some don't , i don't think you should pva as if any water gets through it will go back to being a water base ?

I have 20sq metres on the wall and 5 sq metres on the floor how much do you reckon this would cost im in the essex area

I would be most grateful for your help so when he comes and decides what to put on top of chip board if you guys say ply or hardibacker and he sais the same then he knows what he's talking about

Hi thfc191. What I would do first is make sure the floor is firm with no movement then lay the tiles on to 6mm hardibacker. Do not use PVA to seal the ply if you are going to ply the floor, use a SRB Bond sealer.

Some of the other guys will probably give you more info than I can, so I hope that helps

:welcome: Without seeing the job you should not be receiving a fixing price from the forum.
The walls will have to be checked to see if they will take the weight of travertine tiles.
The floor should be solid before overboarding and no flexing. IMO I would go for 6mm Hardie Backer Boards.
Ask your tiler for all the info and get back for confirmation/or not.

For a 5m2 floor of chipboard the boards firstly need to be screwed to the joists at 300mm centres. Then if the floor is solid...no bounce...lay 6mm Hardiebacker or similar cement based boards, glued and screwed in accordance with Hardie installation instructions. Do Not, Do Not, Do Not be persuaded by any tiler coming to give you an estimate that 6mm ply is "fine". It is not!

As hawkofeagles says, PVA has no place in tiling, do not use it. You also need to ensure that the tiles are laid with a full solid bed of adhesive. Travertine is not strong stuff so it needs to be installed correctly.

Thanks guys he has been round and will drop the quote off in a couple of days , grumpy grouter whats the best adhesive to use for hardibacker ? the more i can do the cheaper the quote will be , i dont mind laying hardi and screwing floors down , anything else he can do

If you are going to do it yourself, a good quality flexible cement based adhesive. But in fairness to the tiler doing the work and giving you guarantees, he would probably be happier doing the prep work himself. This way he knows the job has been done to his own satisfaction. If you do it your self, and then there is a failure of some part of the installation, who will be to blame, you or the tiler. In all honesty, the anount of time it takes to screw down your chipboard, cut and lay 5m2 of hardiebacker, the small extra cost is worth it for the warranty issue alone, in my opinion.

Yeah your'e right i'll ring him and ask him to add screwing the floor down himself, that way guarantee's wont be a problem , thanks for the help

how do you mean , i'm supplying all mats , he's scewing floor down adhesive then hardi back and then tile floor and walls
