Don't waste your time trying to take the tiles up! As someone else has said, with decent underlay the grout lines are unlikely to show through on your carpet.

But if you really must, then prime the tiles then trowel a thin layer of Uzin smoothing compound over them. This is NOT self levelling compound, it can be trowelled on much thinner, and requires firm trowelling effort. It's what floor layers' use before laying vinyl / PVC safety flooring, or linoleum, and trust me, they show up things like grout lines 100 times more than a carpet would.

moving to a new house and the previous tenant has tiled the whole ground floor,
I plan to put carpet in the living room but know the grout lines will eventually show through and ruin the carpet.
should i rip up old tiles or could I put leveling compound down over the tiles?
thanks in advance

An underlay and carpet will be fine... no different to laying over floor board joints if you think about it...
