Hi

Im an 18 year old boy whos been at college for the past 7 months learning the tiling profession 3 days a week and am thoroughly enjoying the work and always aim to challenge myself as much as possible when it comes to tasks set by our tutor.

My only concern is that the college I'm at don't appear to be actively looking for placements for the students even though we were advised that after 6 months they would do. I have tried contacting a few companies myself directly but all are asking for 2 or more years experience which evidently I don't have at present.

So here I am wondering if there were any companies within the Eailing or surrounding area that would be willing to give me the opportunity to improve my knowledge and skills be it via an apprenticeship or work experience (where i'd work for free of course).

If you have any opportunities available or can give me some advice on where I should go from here it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Burt.

:welcome: Burty. Your'e on the right track. You have three things in your favour, the course, this forum and your age. If you haven't got one already, get a cscs card which will allow you some labouring work untill something tiling related comes up.
It's all experience at your age. In the meantime, take your time at college and put together a solid portfolio of your tile work. All the best.

Cut tiles, not corners!

you can charge what you like for your labour inc luding nothing if that suits you

you could offer odd days work free if you want in exchange for gaining experiance but dont get mugged on this and get treated as slave labour

your thinking the right way, ive used this tactic in the past when things have been tight,. thats my dayrate but if you dont like my work dont pay me
ive been paid and kept on

good luck

best of luck fella..I've had people in the past who just finished their course and want to get some experience etc. just speaking from the other side of the coin , bear on mind the problem is always being able to 'teach' someone and still be earning yourself..get a labourers cscs and try and get on a site with a tiling firm as their labourer..that way you can be around the tilers and get stuck in and still earn a few quid and justify your keep whilst being there. the fellas I've had who had an aptitude for it all soon moved onto being working tilers quite quickly.
where there's a will there's a way..it's not easy fro anyone starting out but it sounds like you're realistic and focused at your age..you'll crack it mate hang in there!

GETMEINTOTILING

hi, im new to this and cant find out how to send a new post but im a 23 year old bloke who has done 3 years training to become an electrician but really dont want to do it as im extremely keen in getting into tiling and have been for a while. I was wondering if anyone knows of someone who needs an apprentice tiler or just work for free to gain experience. I am really running out of ideas on what to do to get into it.
I have applied to every tiling firm in yellow pages in my area, tried to get government funding for intensive course etc.
I am a very hard working person and keen to always improve myself and desperately want to be given the chance to prove it to a firm.
I live in West Sussex so if anyone knows of people looking for someone like me can you please HELP.

thank you
Rob
