Here's one for you all....

Went to look at a job today to tile 32 sqm "cuppocino marble" over four rooms. What they have done is screw batons to the floor which is concrete so that they can run the hot water system between the batons. The batons are aprox 4" by 3/4 or 1" or there abouts. He has 18mm chip board which he is going to screw to the batons. The tiles are white and 600 by 600mm. What are the issues with chip board? I have told him to get ply but can't quite remember what it is about chip board that makes it unsuitable. Do I need a de coupling membrane or just a very flexible adhesive? I have recommended a de coupling membrane - am I right? Has anyone heard of cuppocino marble? is it a good quality marble? Or is it just a name?
Any help/advice as to how best to proceed with this would be most appreciated

Cappucino marble is quite brittle but it may just be a name they are using. How thick is it ??

He will need 18mm ply screwed every 6 inches chipboard will have to much flex in it then a layer of durabase ci uncoupling mat. The battern would be good at 350 centres and at any point where they are floating off the floor wedged and gripfilled.,

Depending how big your run is it may need expansions, take a look at this post http://www.tilersforums.com/tiling-forum/14652-expansion-joint-help.html

If the chipboard is down then 12mm ply overboarded opposite direction to chipboard

Hope this helps

Hi tina..

Is there any insulation within the floor....a lot of heat loss there.....as for chipboard...i would use ply as well...chipbord not really stable enough IMO....And yes i would use an uncoupling membrane ..something like durebase ci or schluters ditra...

If you can come back with a few more details on the stone and method of fixing for the battens then we can advise better....

Great answers already yes there are insulating boards between the batons. The batons are screwed to the floor about 25cm or so apart - I certainly thought they were close enough together so as to provice a good base. He plans to do this throughout. The two biggest rooms are around 10 and a half sqm each room so I was wondering if I needed a movement joint on the threshhold to each room. Basically it is a diningroom hallway kitchen and downstairs lav going off the kitchen all to be tiled throughout... 32 sqm in all.The tiles looked like they were 8 or 9 mm thick... I recommended that he changed the chipboard for ply and to have a de coupling membrane. Other than that I take it that its a white flexi adhesive and seal with an inpregnator sealer before and after grouting. In light of the recent thread about natural stone is there anything more I need to know?

I very much doubt it tina......

Can one of you kind gentlemen in tina's area borrow her a rail cutter suitable for 600x600's.....

If not tina i think you need to hire or invest...

i was a little confused reading your original post you say the tiles are white and also that they are cuppocino mable and 60 x 60 by 10mm thick. all the cuppocino marble i have seen has been biege in colour and i have never seen 60cm x 60cm marble tile in 10mm thickness normally tiles that size made of marble are 20mm thick did the customer show you a sample or did they tell you what they are having ?

Hi gary the tiler I only got a quick look at the marble as it had a lot of stuff on top of it but it looked pretty big but they could have been 450 but they didn't look that thick to me I guess they could have been slightly thicker but not by much.
The colour was white with dark veins running through... I had just driven 3 hrs from london and my gear box was not well so perhaps I was a bit distracted plus the place was in absolute chaos. I asked them what type of marble it was and they said they were told it was cappucino marble
