Hi

A question for the forum.

I have removed old tiles from a shower enclosure including plaster, horse hair etc (property built in 1860) leaving very uneven brickwork, non cavity. To level up with the rest of the wall would be around 20mm, my question would be your thoughts on whether to use Bal quickset render, rapid set or perhaps marmox, my main concern being moisture from the wall rather than the shower area itself which I will be tanking.

Bal rapidset is not suitable for the depth you are considering. Marmox/wedi/other similar boards will also go a long way to providing your tanking solution if you use it and seal the joints correctly. If you still wish to go the full tanking route, It may be appropriate just to dot n dab plasterboard instead. Some of the plaster guys on here will be able to advise more on this.

you could render with Mapei Nivoplan then after 24 hours apply Mapei Mapelastic waterproof membrane. This type of membrane will be resistant to negative hydrostatic pressure so it will protect from moisture ingress from the background as well as giving protection from water egress should moisture penetrate the tiling

Tile with Keraflex and fill joints with Ultracolor Plus...........Mapesil AC for internal vertical corners/junctions of wall and floor to match colour of grout

Im not under any time pressure so using Docks idea of using nivoplan then tanking certainly makes sense. I havnt used it before so will take a look at the spec sheets and compatibility with the other products but I think its the route that i'll follow

I'd be tempted to sand and cement render the wall, (with added waterproofer), then, if there's room, dot and dab 12.5mm plasterboard onto it

When i get to the property I'll take a look at how much depth ive got to work with, initial problem is the uneveness of the brickwork. Using the mapei gear to render the wall appeals to me but I wont make that decision untill I next visit the property.

Have to say this forum is worth its weight in gold for the advice given and its great to get different ideas and solutions.
