MDF staircase

I have completed two jobs for the customer which are separated by a mdf stair case.
I have never come across tiling onto mdf.
what do you recommend to tile the stairs?

Not suitable at all IMO.

Weber & the hardyboys recommend 6mm backer board screw through to the frame of the stairs (upstands and step)

You will need movement joints at every orifice .. will it look good.. nah i doubt it.

Didnt realise you couldnt tile onto MDF. Is it a keying issue?? I take it you would ply on top?

You should not tile on Mdf, it is to like card board :lol:
if you were to overboard, you would have to screw threw the mdf into the stair frame as mdf does not hold screws well!

If i overboarded, it would be no less than 15mm (British standards) and imagine the strides people would have to be taking to get up ! :lol:

Schluter recommend overboarding then the boarding... sounds a lot of hassle, the step lips will also have to be trimmed flush with the upstands

A lotta lotta lotta possible expansion in a timber staircase... and will the risers/treads/strings take the extra weight of boarding and tiling and so on for yrs to come..

being a brand new staircase & building I shall expect some movement & settling.
the mdf will have natural deflection.. I think i shall pass on this one

One of the projects I'm overseeing just got to painting stage. We had a mdf staircase made to save on cost and its taken a beating the treads are splitting already. IMO I would not tile even if overboarded I'm thinking of replacing them mashpatato would be better.

the customer wouldn't have the upstands and treads changed to something else as the stairs is new

well first i would want to know its stregh and build quailty and the i would try to talk the client in to single peices for treads and riser heres one i did 6 years ago
