Mosaic border thinner than field tile?

Have done this a few times now and it really slows the job down, just wondered what method others use, last one I did I made a template to get the addy the right thickness but was really messy.
Looking next time to try leaving the border out till by using old bits of tile to span the gap, when main tiles have set then put the border in, again using template to get right thickness.
If anyone has a better way please let me know.

try cutting 6"6" tiles u can get in thicknesses off 5mm..5.5mm...6mm
fix 2 wall same size off border ..then fix mosaic border on top 2 bring level with rest off tiles ...works a treat no messin with addy:8:

That looks interesting. I haven't done any mosaics yet, they scare me a little lol!

You can also use thin backer boards to patch up with......they startat about 4mm thick...so just depends wot thickness you need to make up..

There is a method called the Dogtooth method. Danny Brant is the best one to explain it.

I'll try but I bet no one understands it. You use a tile slightly larger than your border tile then cut the two corners to form a dog tooth the correct depth.

Tile as normal then when you place the adhesive for the border you use the dog tooth as your guide to take the adhesive down to the exact depth then just fit your border. I have done it but I am crap at explaining it.

I think the dogtooth is what I did last time, but next timeI think I may be better getting all the main tiles on first,it is messy trying to prop up the main tiles and making sure the weight of them doesn't squash the mosaic.
Also like the idea of packing them with thin cheap tiles but 4m/m might be too thick for this, grrr I hate these borders look nice when there done though.

When having this problem I cut down some thin mdf the height of the mosaic plus the width of the spacers and use these to hold the tiles. Once set then fix the mosaics using a dog comb.

I cut pieces of waste tile to the width of the border, put a spot of adhesive on back to hold them at the same level as the wall tiles.
These are then sat on the half tiling, you can then continue with the top half.
The next day remove the cuts and make up the thickness with rapid set using a small bucket trowel.
Then when dry I fixed the glass mozaics, I works for me every time

thin backer boards nice one dave that's handy to know, I'd said that to my mate when I was tiling this job didn't realise they made them that thin

looks quite interesting, my try these out myself.

You can, if you have the time and the border or accent is wide, do a screed.
Take the proper sized notch and mix some rapid-set fairly stiff, apply it keeping the combed ridges the exact height.
let set and check to see if you nailed the height.
Using a close c-notch will give a level bed with room for your thinset.
Or you can use a flat trowel to fill up the notches in a second pass and then when that is dry apply the mosaic.
