My first slate and pattern quote.

Hi again all,

Went to look at a job the other day that was a new build. The cust wants Slate (Natural slate sheeron multicolour) tiles laid in this sort of pattern

.(What is this design called please!!?)

Now I have a few questions........What would I need to cut slate tiles on both my Rubi and Wet cutter (or are they wet cut only?) The slate is around 1cm thick

What Adh would I lay them with ...the cust suggested that he was going to lay them with a sand and mortar mix but he ran out of time.

How on earth do you begin to measure out with a design like this? In sqm? or sets of tiles?

Do you charge extra for slate and this sort of design?

The passage way is around 5sqm and the Kitchen around 18sqm.

I would love to take this job on but as you know my speed is a personal issue at present and the guys cant finish the kitchen without the floor being done. And everyone seems to want their jobs done yesterday!

Man this job has one hell of a learning curve that I cant see the end of!!

Ps just in case you missed it I got the job for the three floors in a week. £650 plus mat minus Highlanders petrol and days consultancy fee! LOL

Tiles will need to be wet cut or grinder with good blade dusty though, I normally wet cut.

You measure m2 and allow extra 10%

Yes I charge extra for slate and any fancy patterns need to allow a bit more time for the setting out and the sealing takes time as well.

To what adhesive it does depend on substrate your tiling onto ie wood, underfloor heating etc.

I meant to say how do you start setting out not measure! and the substrate is concrete.

other than that is there not much difference between laying these to ceramic? or is that question laughable!

Generally speaking natural slate tile come in different thiknesses, therefore your planning needs to be more comprehensive to ensure that the floor is somewhere near level (never gonna be 100 flat with slate). Tiles need to be seperated into piles depending on their thickness and laid accordingly. Do a search of the forums as there are other threads with a lot of advice on laying slate.

Main issue was the fact that the large tiles were almost three times the thickness of the smallest ones, hence I was using as much addy under the small tiles as the largest. I used rapid flexi but at one time I wondered if I should be using a 'thick bed' addy as the floor was crap as well! Glad I sealed them first as I did a lot of lifting back out and refixing,

the setting out isnt as complicated as you might think as there is a pattern repeat lay the tiles out dry to the pattern and measure where it repeats it self this is your grid size, centre your room out ,if appropriate ,then 3-4-5 your sq line ,then grid the floor out to your grid size ,alternatively make up a gauge stick the size of the pattern repeat you will need 2 pinch rods as its different n-s to e-w

You can also switch the pattern to run left or right.....very easy to follow.......i have done it many times with a tile called Domino monzerat from CTD..........
