new business name advice !

hi all !! right my question is basicly iam thinking of changing my Business name and have found a nice company name to go on the side of my van etc , the problem is there is another tiler with the same name i want, but he is down london area and iam trading around the north east area. would this be a problem as where both different ends of the country ?

Plenty of trades with the same name. I know there are 2 Sir Ramics about ( I dont trade under that name ) theres a few Crocotiles too.

Not sure on the legality but I'm sure if the other tiler hasn't registered his/her company name then it will be fine but don't quote me on that one!!

If you are a sole trader - you can trade under any name you like (as long as it isn't offensive etc). If you are a limited company - you cannot trade under the same name as another limited company. There is nothing wrong with two companies, however, having names like "tiling (london) ltd" and "tiling (newcastle) ltd". Also - you can be a limited company trading under a completely different name e.g "tiling ltd" trading as "the canny tiler"...so go ahead- call yourself what you like from someone who is trading under a very unimaginative name but who has two registered limited companies neither of which is trading at the moment but which are registered to protect the names for future use.

thanks for the advice ! i was trading as terry's tiling but thought it was a bit cowboy ish and a couple of customers agreed !.. like bob the builder etc .. i spotted a van with john the bricky the other day and thought theres no way i would call him to build my wall lol.. just sounds wrong !!
