newbie, grout sealing

Hi all,
Pleased to be on a professional forum.
Would appreciate advice if poss!
Have tiled 2 en-suites (at home) with a cement/grout. It is very hard and if cleanedf off before it has dried, cleans out the gaps.... When dry leaves pin holes and bare areas of grout. If left to dry, is it impossible to remove without recourse to stainless wire wool!! Anything I should have done to avoid this, as I have the bathroom yet to do, and removing the grout film and re-grouting etc is getting tedious? The other factor is in sealing the finished grout!
From the forum I see I require a penetrating sealant. Any advice as to what is available would be very appreciated, as I would rather only do it once every 10 years; and experience is worth more than 100 slick salesmen!!

sounds as if the mix is too wet. after grouting with the float leave for 10 to 15 mins then wipe off with a damp sponge. the grout lines should be smooth and uniform this way

Thanks for all the comments and advice! Your speed of response is staggering!
The problem is that the grout was a Focus product and is pre-mixed. I know, it's probably not the best, but when set it is like ceramic!..... Other grouts I have used in the past have been very soft by comparison.
What to seal it with please????
