hi there im terry just training to become a tiler got two more weeks left of my course just finding my feet at the mo with the best adhesives cutters etc to use im thinking of going for the ardex range or bal ? let me know what you guys think!

Welcome to the forum mate, I preffer to use Mapei. I guess it depends on what you can get local to you and what the cost is. I know Mapei gives me peice of mind and I can get it a decent price.

dont think i can get mapi local ill do some searches tho!thanks for the input ! also i have my first job lined up in feb im tiling over tiles but part of the wall is painted and they want the full wall tiled instead of half way. should i just pack the tiles out with adhesive? any other ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

If you want to make a bit of money or be competitive in getting work, you need to find an adhesive that you like/is good/and fairly priced.
Both brands you have quoted are excellent adhesives - but there are others you may wish to consider. Click on the Mapei sponsor link to check out their range and find a local supplier.

Your later question about tiling over existing tiling and painted walls, will have a better response if you repost it in the tiling forum.
You'll need to consider the weight aspect of the new tiles on both surfaces and the preparation that will be required for both.
I'd use your next 2 weeks of training to ask this question of your instructors and make notes to compare with those replies from the forum.

Welcome James, if you're going to tile the whole wall take the originals off first. Ardex and Bal are prob the most expensive addy's but not necessary the best, so shop around.

Regarding Adhesives, use what you can find locally to you and find your way. They can all differ, (ie I dont like using BAL, too expensive and I cant get on with it either!). So try 'em and discard 'em as you will.

cheers for the info guys! i asked the person training me today and he reccomends buying some cheap tiles to tile excisiting wall to pack out then tile over them! problem solved not very expensive either as only a small space that requires this! ill deffo shop around for adhesives!

Your trainer has recommended that you tile over tiles? Did he discuss weight issues with you?
Its bad practice in my book, the walls should be properly prepped before hand.
