I quoted for a bathroom floor the other week. I won’t go into all the details except for the fact that the lady showed me the tile she wanted laying. It was ceramic 300x300. The quote was a very competitive one, but she still tried to beat me down on price. When I arrived for the job the tile size grew to 600x300. Luckily I only live 2 miles away so I had to go home for my TS60. I told her that I would normally charge extra for large format tiles and explained to her the reasons. However, I said I would do it for the original quote. She did not thank me, but went on to say how she wanted them laid…….starting with a full tile at the window and a full tile along the bath. She also checked that I was using BAL adhesive. The amount of tiles she purchased did not seem enough for the job, but I started anyway. Near the end of the job I worked out that I she was 6 tiles short. So I offered to drive to Topps on the way home and get them. The next day I gave her the receipt for £20.58 and said that I got discount on the tiles. She wanted to give me a cheque for the amount, but I said I would rather have cash. A couple of hours later she said she had my money. A £20 note, 50p piece, 5p and 3 pennies. Has anyone else ever been paid in pennies? When the job was finished she was very pleased. She paid by cheque. When I got home I realised that she had wrote two different amounts in each section. So I now have to go back again for a new cheque. She was also the kind of customer that went round checking every tile, she was a bit miffed when I was unable to cut a tile to fit around the toilet. It would have been impossible to make that cut because of the size of the tile. She kept pointing out tiny bits of grout haze that had formed in patches on the floor. I had cleaned the floor 4 times. I am half expecting that she should have spent the night on her hands and knees and will now have a snag list for when I turn up for my new cheque!!
