Hello,

I am planing on using no more ply over my existing 18mm flooring to lay 600x300 porcelain tiles.

Would there be any benefit in laying 2 layers of the 6mm no more ply to create 12mm covering.

Will this make the floor stronger or is the 6mm enough.

The joist are 8x2 at 16inch centres with a span of 10ft. There is no noticeable deflection when tested with a laser and the 18mm floor is in good condition

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

6mm nmp will add a bit of strength to the floor which i'm assuming is chipboard. 2 layers will definitely add more strength. depending how bad the deflection is i'd consider adding noggins and more fixings or using Blanke Permat.

Just checking but you do realise you can get NMP in 12mm rather than having to put 2 layers of 6mm down?

Id say only marginally, and with joists at 400 centres like the Op has then 12mm boards would be sufficient, in my humble pinion of course :)
Actually, if you read nmp's literature then you'll find that overboarding with 6mm and 12mm adds the same strength according to them. Cross laminating them would add far more strength in my opinion. To strengthen the floor permat would be the way to go

One 12mm layer will be cheaper and quicker than two 6mm layers.........if it was even needed in this case, which seems doubtful!
Looks like overkill and added difference in height to the floor

Around £9 a sheet and £7 per tube of pu glue. Their self tappers also £7 for 200

Cheers for the help lads. The reason I wanted to double up the 6mm is that it is much more dense than the 12 mm and I thought it would give a stronger floor.

Another option would be to put 12mm ply down and tank it. Does any one still use ply.

No tiling on ply is a thing of the past.. if you are happy with the additional height, just put one 12mm NMP down and you'll be sorted, but as others have said, if you dont need the height, one 6mm NMP should suffice
