With tiling work being slow i whent back to were i used to work a few months ago and i manage to get tiling/plumbing work Fri/Sat. I do four days a month repairing tiles through out the factory. Today i was called to have a look at some tiles that have come up, this caused a loud bang (tiles have been down 40 yrs) have a look at the pic's and let me know what you think.

That in the tiling trade is known as tenting....too much expansion in the substrate for the tiling installation to handle...thus causing them to tent up....this can happen suddenly and make that noise as well.....

You need to check the integrity of the tiles ....is there any existing joints in the substrate under the tiles that have popped..?.

Sounds and looks like they have been laid direct to a screed bed, as they we used to do years back...and tight butt jointed as well...

2 options really...

1 : patch in as best you can and wait till next repair...

2 : Rip the whole lot up and re-do putting expansion points in...

It really looks like the tiling has served its purpose and gave up the ghost so to speak...

Thanks for the reply, i will need to dig it up and try build an expansion joint into the sub floor. I have done a lot of repairs and you dont know whats under the floor till you start digging, i have posted pics of some damage and how far i have had to go.

You could just cut straight down the tiles on a grout line with a concrete saw and put an expansion joint in. However, you may also be cutting your nose off to spite your face regarding work.! The tiles look as though they have been sealed with something? Are they quarries? I thought all food prep places had to have epoxy grout these days???
