You should remove all the grout from beneath the row of tiles that are staying on the walls, remove some from the edges as well, use a grout rake if you do not have a fein.
Start at the bottom and carefully remove a tile, then use a chisel to get behind the tiles and lever them off. If the tiles are on plasterboard then its likely that you will cause damage to the walls, there is not a lot you can do about that.
Explain to the customer what might happen and that you may have to re-board with new plasterboard. If you do make sure that you get your levels right so that the new and old tiles line up.
