Pine Ply

Hi, im trying to sort some ply to do a job over xmas but my timber merchants have only got a pine ply in 12mm and over available before xmas. This is WBP but obviously not a hardwood version. Is this still ok to use or am i likely to run into problems.

Its a cost issue, budget is tight on the job and there is 58sq meters of floor to tile works out at double the cost for backer boards

PDC is right about using ply. Ply worked well for the industry for many years but things have got better. That said, ply just doesn't just stop working for us. If you are going to use ply we would recommend a 12mm WBP or a Class 3 Flooring Grade Ply screwed at 150mm centres, Primed with an SBR or acrylic primer and tiled with an S1 or S2 adhesive. All usual checks for deflection and suitability of the substrate must be carried out first. Also check the suitability of your adhesive it may have different standards to ours.

Id do all of the above as standard practice i just wondered whether the fact the ply was pine as apposed to hardwood would make any significant difference. I suspect as long as its WBP also it shouldnt be too much if an issue once installed correctly.

Ask your supplier for the certs for the ply to prove wbp. Watch the blank stares!

Pine is a fast growing tree and suffers much more expansion and contraction as a result.
You wouldn't tile onto pine floorboard for the same reason.

pine ply also know as shuttering ply the glue between layers may be wbp but your water based adhesive
will soak into the pine delamanating the layers it will swell up and your tiles will fail easy test cut a corner
put in a bucket of water and see what happens

I believe you would get the same result with hardwood wbp as the hardwood is not waterproof only the glue .

believing is one thing knowing anther so find out for your self cut a piece of each put them in a bucket
of water and see what happens to each and how fast .your knowledge will go up one level .
