plasterboard fixing

Hi Everyone great forum as always hope someone can help with some questions i have


1. I just wondered when putting up new plasterboard whether the boards join together (overlap) into the internal corners unlike tiling when you need a gap for expansion ?

2. does it matter what thickness of plasterboard to use ?

3. sorry for a daft question whats the difference between the main 2 plasterboards- tapered and square edge ?

No need to leave expansion on internal joints

12.5 mm plasterboard is for walls and 9.5 mm for ceilings as they're easier to handle.

You would use tapered edge if you were to Ames tape the boards for a better finish.

Tapered edge boards are normally used when walls are to be painted, where the 2 meet leaves an indent, this is taped and filled then sand, filled as needed etc to give a flush smooth finish with the board.

Square edge if there being skimmed.

Thanks lads what would be used to fill the internal corners on the plasterboards ? no scrimp tape needed ?

as i understand it tiles can be fixed straight onto the boards without any need for any skim or any primer

If you have any exposed areas of gypsum, prime if your using powdered adhesive.

No need for scrim and you can just tile straight onto the boards, but if you are using plasterboard in a wet area then I would recommend tanking the boards.

so go for tapered edge boards !!

To avoid tanking the wet areas of an ensuite could you use aqua panel boards in the wet areas and plasterboard throughout the rest of the bathroom ?

You can use the aqua-panel but you still need to tape the joints to make water tight.

if you are going to use aqua panel, then you will need to batten out the shower area as aqua panel is mechanically fixed using screws..

heres some pointers, this should give you all the info you need !

. Aqua panel are 12.5mm thick
. Maximum weight ratio 50kg/per m2
. There are 2 sizes for standard applications - 1200mm x 900mm AND 2400mm x 900mm

Installation...
. Mechanically fix to timber or metal framework at 250mm centres.
. Use 25mm ‘knauf aqua panel maxi-screws’ for metal AND 40mm screws for timber partitions.
. Fix boards in a horizontal brick bond pattern and leave 3mm between boards
. Allow 3-5mm from walls, ceiling and adjacent walls.
. Fill all the gaps with SPF adhesive and ‘knauf aqua panel joint tape’.
. Aqua panel can be shaped into curves by bending / shaping into position. It has a reinforcement mesh built into the board, so it will hold a curve up to a certain radius.
