Plasterboard or Cement Backer Board

Hi All

DIY question on my ongoing small bathroom refurbishment.

I have started removing the existing tiles and they are so well stuck on that they are pulling chunks of plasterboard away, leaving a very uneven surface.

I have decided to take of the whole lot, boards and all and start again.

What should I use, plasterboard or cement backerboard. The walls will be tilled floor to ceiling using 420mm x 300mm ceramic tiles.

I favour 6mm cement backer board, the 12mm seem overkill to me..........!!!!!!

6mm backer board is too thin for wall tiles, either use 12mm backer board or 12.5 mm plasterboard mate.

Thanks for the quick reply Doug, can I just tile straight onto the plasterboard or does it need skimming first.....???

tile straight onto it mate, best not to skim it.

Cheers, having looked at the existing, it looks like 9mm plasterboard that has been tilled onto, this would best match up to existing window etc, is 9mm to thin for ceramic tiles....???

Do I have to prime the plasterboard with anything before tilling...???

Also is this suitable for the area around the bath where the shower is...???

If you are tiling can't you just build the window out? There is a 'green' plasterboard fot damp areas.

You might also want to look at using aqua panel around the bath where the shower is , you may as well use this instead of plaster board to ensure waterproofing / it needs no priming and is made for tiling .

You could also tank the plasterboard
