Discuss Please help are tiling methods used correct? in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

Can I ask advice please; I have MS and the worry is making me ill. The tiles are all chipped. The tiler says it is the tiles they need specialise equipment to cut so we have to put up with chips all round window- at first he was going to hide with trim but it looked wrong. See pics. he has ordered 23mm t shaped trim to hide edges and chipped tiles but I think it will look wrong. Alternative is him grouting chips.
Where he took tiles off the adhesive had been put on in blobs; is this right? (sometimes fixed onto flaky emulsion)
the shower wall has been painted with grey stuff see pics; is this enough?
the floorboards were covered in Ditramat and tiled on top is this ok?
he says the corners will have mastic which will cover uneven tiles... do you mastic corners in bathroom?
he insists he will finish it on Friday And I feel intimidated. Wants cash.
He may be right that I am picky but I don’t feel happy. Please help!

Morning, from the pics on the window you can see your concerns about chipping and needs addressing and the internal corners do indeed get siliconed as it’s a movement joint. But some aren’t the neatest cuts.
The point raised about blobs under the tiles , not a fixing method that is condoned within the tiling industry and also needs to be highlighted.
I also notice on a couple pics that joints don’t line up on an external corner. Write down all your concerns and air these with your installer as I won’t use the term “Tiler” as it’s certainly not the work of a pro. Good luck and keep us informed how you progress.

Thanks for your reply. These are big heavy porcelain tiles and I wonder how bad the situation is? Ie do they need removing and replacing? If so I feel I would have to get a quote for that from a professional tiler. Our builder came recommended! Thank you.

Some of the corner joints have had grout put on. When I pointed out broken corners on these tiles he said the mastic will cover it. It’s a terrible job to be sure. Should these movement joints have grout and mastic?

Looking at your other post on the floor tiles , you need to stop him asap. The lot will need removing and installing correctly I’m afraid.
If you keep all pics etc to this thread , then we can help better and not jump between other threads.

Sorry I am having trouble navigating. All tiles round the window were removed to have trim done but otherwise finished. He wants to mastic and be paid. I was worried they might need to be removed and put up properly. Do I give him the chance to remove and replace tiles? I don’t feel like paying him for it as he has ruined all my tiles and given me a huge job to replace them.

Just seen these. So assume it’s the same problem and bathroom.

He is a friend of a friend. it was a complete bathroom refurb not just tiling. Does a lot of work and my friend was very happy with her bathroom. I saw photos. She didn’t have big porcelain tiles though just the small letterbox type. And hindsight is a great thing. whatever I have done in future I will employ trades myself and not rely on a builder. Even if it takes longer.

Progress;
builder has been paid £1,000 up front for materials and plasterer. I paid for tiles that are now useless. He has said I have 2 options either he will come on Monday and make it look good... re set chipped tiles and grout chips and mastic... or if not I can sack him and not pay any more and get it sorted myself. He says if I have it retiled I am ‘using a sledgehammer to crack a nut’. Exposed tiles all have large gaps behind them. A large number have been laid over emulsion paint. He painted tanking over emulsion too. He says that that is what you do. is it? He says the gaps are fine as moisture won’t get through grout.is it?
i asked him why the btw toilet had a sloping gap between it and unit; he said my floor was sloping... it isn’t. One of several untruths . So it’s hard to trust him. Nice as he is.
I don’t know what to do.
