Hi,
I'm looking at laying some slate floor tiles. I have a few questions after reading some differing ideas on the best way to pre-seal slate floor tiles.
The tiles I have are made in china, and are called "Natural Riven Slate" in Dovedale Grey -
I think I'm fairly lucky that the tiles seem to be quite uniformly cut in all dimensions, so the preparation I have completed so far is to Wash them down with clean water to remove the surface dust. I'd like to keep the natural matt look of the stone, and was advised that LTP Mattstone is a very good impregnating sealer to achieve this look whilst adequately sealing the stone.
Now, onto my question - pre-sealing. I've seen plenty of conflicting advice about this, but my view on this after reading all the advice about it is to pre-seal to be sure that any stray grout will not stain the tile surface. What has not been so clear is how much of the tile needs sealing? Is it recommended to pre-seal all sides of the tile, or just the surface which will be visible once the floor is laid? I've seen one site which suggested doing one coat on the none-visible sides, but then other sites advise not to do this as it can prevent the grout from fully bonding to the tiles surface.
Any help and advice would be gratefully received.
