Prepping plasterboard

Hello All,

I have read various topics on how to tile on plasterboard. Still confused.

I have a plasterboard wall in my bathroom. It is not a wall that a shower or bath will be attached.

I am using quite large tiles 235 x 355mm porcelain I think. I have not bought them yet. On offer in one of the sheds.

It is basically a job so it matches the rest of the bathroom before sale of the house.

Can anyone suggest the quickest and most cost effective method of fixing these tiles. Regarding whether the plasterboard needs to be primed, if ready mixed adhesive can be used and what types etc.

Any advice will be appreciated.

your tiles are a bit too big to be using tubbed adhesive so i would opt for a cement based(especially in a bathroom)most adhesives will tell you on the bag if the plasterboard will need primed first or not! would opt for a flexible adhesive also and flexi grout!

I was hoping to avoid the need to mix up the adhesive myself. But if that's what it takes then so be it.

it's a lot safer due to the size of tiles and also a bathroom!

Some adhesive manufacturers say it is not necessary to prime plasterboard before tiling with cement based adhesive, and some others do (BAL). I have got into the habit of doing it and would recommend it is done, for te following reasons...it will help protect any damaged parts of the paper skin area as gypsum can exposed if paper torn, and for me the main benefit...it gives more adjustment time for your tiles as it stops the paper sucking the moisture out too quickly. the additional benefit of this is it also allows for easier cleaning of excess adhesive. Unprimed plasterboard makes this bit a little bit more difficult.

And the fact they are porcelain as well...

MAPEI P9 is excellent for that job for you.....slow setting and about an 8hr pot life , so will give you loads of time to work with it...
